Ilmala Traction Station

The Pasila area in central Helsinki is growing rapidly, with the population estimated to triple to 30 000 residents by 2040. Extensive local and national railroad connections and street and tram networks make the area one of the best connected in Finland. The Ilmala Traction Station provides electricity for the expanding local tram lines.

The traction station has been designed to fit into the dense urban situation. Flat-locked, black-patinated titanium zinc panels cover the facades of the building. Some diamond-shaped panels have been left out to serve as architectural lighting recesses.
